Hello There!

Some time ago, I was an author like you, pouring over my own manuscript and comparing its quality to all the books on my shelves. And, maybe like you, I was always left deflated. Because how on earth could my little story ever amount to the greatness of all the acclaimed authors that have come before me?

I know, I was stupidly comparing a first draft to a published book. But the imposter syndrome was real. The thought of someone reading what I believed to be slop filled me with dread. I was even fearful to send it to my editor, confident she would just laugh and say "don’t give up the day job!"

So I started fiddling with my manuscript, in an attempt to get it somewhat credible so the odds of my editor throwing it back in my face were severly reduced.

That was when I discovered I love editing as much as I love writing.

Seeing my simple sentences turn into gripping narrative was extraordinary. Watching my plot tighten to the point of sealed shut was staggering. My ugly duckling manuscript was becoming a beautiful swan!

Don’t get me wrong, my editor still had plenty of work to do – you always need an editor – but a revelation had been made and my path to helping you was set.

I'm currently reading:

Die Trying by Lee Child

Fast forward a few years, where I had been made redundant from my day job for the second time, and I was left scrambling, thinking "well what do I do now?!" My book wasn’t ready yet and them bills needed paying. Then it hit me. Editing for other authors just like me. Helping other authors just like me. Authors who may be scared or confused or just looking for some comfort.

Putting my big girl pants on, waving my English degree, and gathering every ounce of knowledge I had of self-publishing, I dove head first into the editing world.

When I’m not editing or writing I can usually be found reading. Or doing puzzle books. I also crochet and garden if I find the time. I always enjoy learning and I’m currently dusting off my German after having not spoken it for nearly 20 years. I live in the not as rainy as you’d think UK, with my partner and a small human (although she’s growing like a weed!) who are the best cheerleaders I know, and they don’t judge me for the slight Dr Pepper addiction I may have.

And that brings us to today. I’ve got six years of self-publishing experience under my belt. I’m a proud member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP). I’ve met some wonderful authors along the way (no matter what they tell themselves). And my passion for words hasn’t slowed down. I LOVE my job and I continuously love supporting other authors.

Here's to many, many, many more years of editing!                       Sasha Lysette x
